Construction Contract Dispute and Claim Handbook Division 07 Thermal & Waterproofing

Division 7 Thermal and Moisture Protection represent sections of work that are frequently the source of both interior and exterior water damage claims that have nothing to do with plumbing or piping. This is because thermal and moisture systems must be relied upon to perform as impermeable barriers against exterior weather systems – chiefly water, and water vapor, but also as thermal protection against exterior temperature changes. In other words they are the last point of defense in the building envelope.
The US IEEE stipulates 2012 Energy Codes that define performance criteria for new residential construction. Designers must adhere to IEEE criteria in their designs. The codes are determined, in part, by building use. It would be unusual to discover a claim pertaining to thermal insulation. Division 7 ‘insulation’ is not to be confused with (MEP) mechanical and piping insulation.
